Cardinal Joseph William Tobin of Newark will undergo surgery tomorrow to remove a kidney mass. The Archdiocese reports that tests suggest the mass is confined to the kidney, and doctors are optimistic. Examination after surgery will determine whether it is cancerous and if further treatment is needed. Cardinal Tobin hopes to resume his duties within weeks.

The number of Ireland’s Catholic bishops could be reduced by as much as a third following Vatican consultations that involved Pope Leo shortly before his election to the papacy last year.
