Pope Leo Accepts Resignation Of Bishop Investigated For Sexual Abuse
Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the diocese of Huacho (Peru) presented by Monsignor Antonio Santarsiero Rosa, O.S.I., as reported this Tuesday by the Holy See Press Office. The decision comes just over a month after the prelate turned 75, on June 13, the age at which canon law requires bishops to submit their resignation to the Pope. The Vatican statement offers no explanation regarding the acceptance of the resignation and makes no reference to the complaints that have come to light in recent months. The acceptance of the resignation comes three months after InfoVaticana revealed a complaint of alleged sexual abuse of a minor and a deacon against the prelate. I recently attended the funeral of a young man who died tragically. It happened to be a solemn high Traditional Latin Mass, entirely licit and even affirmed by the presence of our local bishop, his retired predecessor, and a couple dozen priests. That liturgy, however, was – all extraneous considerations aside – definitely not something to be reduced to the controversies surrounding the recent SSPX consecrations, the back and forth about Traditionis custodes (Pope Francis’ sharp curtailing of the TLM), or the short- and long-term fallout of Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Vatican II document on liturgy). It was all directed towards prayer for the eternal destiny of the young man’s soul and the souls of us all, which – sad to say – seem to get scant attention in the Church today, even at funerals. It was a deeply moving experience, and it got me thinking, afterwards, as to why modern funerals so often are not. There’s been a massive shift in the Church towards what are often even called …

A group of LGBT activists took part in an event with Pope Leo XIV in June upon the invitation of the Archdiocese of Madrid. On June 7, the women’s portion of CRISMHOM (“Christians of Madrid Homosexuals”) joined an event hosted by Pope Leo called “Weaving Networks with the Worlds of Culture, Art, the Economy and Sport.” It was joined by artists, athletes, business leaders, and academics “to discuss how to continue to foster dialogue between the Church and contemporary society,” according to the heterodox, pro-LGBT New Ways Ministry. The Rev. Michael Pfleger has been removed from his ministry at St. Sabina Church as the Archdiocese of Chicago investigates a claim of child sexual abuse from more than 30 years ago. It’s the fifth decades-old accusation against the South Side priest in four years. Pfleger was cleared of the other accusations. In a letter to parishioners Saturday, Cardinal Blase Cupich said the alleged abuse happened at St. Sabina Church more than 30 years ago. He said Pfleger “strongly denied” the accusation. In a written statement, Pfleger called the allegation, “an absolute lie.” Pfleger said he was informed of the accusation Thursday by the vicar of priests and told the accuser is a woman who went to school at St. Sabina and that she said she was sexually abused by Pfleger sometime between 1993 and 1995, when she was a minor. Forget the individual accused for a moment. An accused priest is guilty until proven innocent. I know, 97% of the accused are eventually thought to be guilty. But remember, priests are guilty until proven innocent. But the blame for this injustice of the assumed guilt lies on the Church for hiding abusers for decade upon decade. Is Fr. Pfleger guilty? Maybe. And I abhor his brand of "Catholicism." By the way, the Chicago Sun Times article states that he is 73 years old. He is 77. What other details did you get wrong, Sun Times?
