Bishop Patrick Neary of Saint Cloud, Minnesota, issued a diocesan warning against the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) after an unauthorized Mass was celebrated in the diocese. The Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) has published a position paper (September 2) opposing the erasure of baptismal records under EU data-protection law. The EU's top court considers a case involving the Diocese of Ghent in Belgium. COMECE argues that baptismal registers are not membership lists but records of a historical event: that a baptism took place. Under Catholic canon law, baptism is received only once, and the record is used to establish a person's status for later sacraments, including marriage. The bishops add that requiring deletion could interfere with the Church's autonomy and institutional freedom of religion.
