New study from the Weizmann Institute suggests Viagra’s active ingredient, sildenafil, may help stop cancer from spreading.
Cancer cells need cholesterol to break away from a tumor and invade other organs. Researchers found sildenafil traps that cholesterol inside the cell, cutting off its ability to metastasize. Effects appeared even stronger when combined with statins, and a separate patient analysis linked sildenafil use to better survival outcomes.
Important caveat, this is preclinical and observational data. No one should start taking Viagra to prevent cancer. Human trials are the next step.
Still, a striking example of drug repurposing. A blood pressure medication that became an ED drug might now have a role in oncology.
